At 9 a.m., Hamilton Public Safety Director Scott Scrimizzi said the Hanover Street crossing had reopened and CSX was continuing to get the train moving again. Soon after, an engine was hooked up to the stopped train cars, pulling the train south. Just before 10 a.m., the last car was seen moving across the Great Miami River behind the former Hamilton Police Department building.
On Thursday, police officers were alerted around 11:50 p.m. by CSX regarding the blocked crossings, Lt. Joe Barker said in a news release.
CSX reported two detailed cars near Hanover Street. One was an empty steel car, and the other was a loaded auto rack. Crews worked overnight to clear the tracks.
Railroad crossings affected included:
- Hanover Street
- Walnut Street
- South MLK Jr. Boulevard
- South Fourth Street
- South Third Street
- South Second Street
- South Front Street
- Millville Avenue
The crossing at Walnut Street, just north of the Hanover Street crossing, has been the site of multiple derailments in recent years, including one in 2022 that involved four train cars going off the tracks.
Before the derailment on Thursday, that crossing was closed to traffic as crews had been working at that site replacing rail ties, Scrimizzi said.
